The Real Harris: Keith Barlow
Tell us about your background. How did you get your start in the construction/service/BAS business?
I started in construction based upon my interest in architecture. I received an associate degree in architecture and structural design. I then pursued a BS degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology. I worked my way through college at Superior Air Handling (now Harris) as a detailer, drawing by hand, putting my architectural understanding to practice. When I graduated, I decided to stay in the sheet metal industry and that evolved from hand drawings to BIM/VDC today.
What drew you to Harris? What makes you stay?
Harris is a good company to work for, but really it is the association with the people I work with that makes it worth staying here.
What do you enjoy about working at Harris (what about the company itself made you want to work here)?
The people, the leadership, the openness, the desire for improving and doing things in a quality way.
What is the best part about your position (the day-to-day, people, a special project you were involved with)?
The best part of the day is when I get to model something, work through a problem and see that it all fits together. That is when my day goes by the fastest, and I can lose track of time.
What traits do you think are important for someone in your role to be successful?
Never give up. Just keep trying and keep learning. Do your best every day. Recognize that we are all part of a team. Show appreciation for the help you receive and be willing to help your teammates.
What are your main responsibilities and initiatives that you lead?
I work on the BIM team as a VDC Technician, so I primarily create a 3D model of the ducts and equipment. I also coordinate 3D BIM models to make things fit within the building and with the other trades. Then, I get things ready for fabrication, so that the rest of the team can stay on schedule for the project.
What are you passionate about at work?
I am passionate about making sure things are done right. If I do a really good job and everything goes together well during the installation, then I most likely never hear about it, and I am okay with that.
How do you like to re-charge?
I enjoy riding ATV’s with my sons in the mountains of Utah. I like to get to a place that has a spectacular view where I can see for miles and just enjoy how beautiful nature is. When I can’t be doing that, I enjoy relaxing at home
What keeps you up at night?
At this point in my life, there is little that keeps me up at night.
What are you most proud of at Harris?
I get the most satisfaction at Harris from being part of a team, building some really cool projects and knowing that I had a part of that.
What is one thing Harris employees wouldn’t know about you?
That I am a religious person.
What inspires you? What motivates you?
Knowing that I can make a difference in someone’s life by helping it become better. Helping someone get through tough times, so that they can enjoy the better times. And seeing others doing the same out of their own kindness.
