The Real Harris: Meet Nick Kilen
Tell us about your background. How did you get your start in the construction/service/BAS business?
I used to do work with my uncle. Everything from roofing & siding to remodel.
What drew you to Harris? What makes you stay?
I applied just looking for a job. I stay because I get to work with friends now.
What do you enjoy about working at Harris (what about the company itself made you want to work here)?
This company makes me feel like I am part of a family.
What is the best part about your position (the day-to-day, people, a special project you were involved with)?
I like how I do different things throughout the day, not just one thing day in and day out.
What traits do you think are important for someone in your role to be successful?
You need to be a hard worker and care about the work you do. My name is on it, so to speak and I do not want my name known for poor quality.
What are you passionate about at work?
I enjoy creating. I am grateful to have a job that I enjoy.
How do you like to re-charge?
I spend time with my daughter, game nights or shopping. Going to concerts is my peace.
What keeps you up at night?
Failing. I am afraid of letting my daughter down.
What are you most proud of at Harris?
Being a part of something that is across the nation. I am proud of projects in different states that I had a part in.
What is one thing Harris employees wouldn’t know about you?
Most people don’t know that I went from homeless to homeowner while working here.
What drew you to this industry?
Most of my family works in construction, so it drew me this direction, but I like being able to say “I did that” after a job.
What do you wish the public knew about Harris?
How it is like a family. The people I work with care; they do not just come in, work and go home.
What inspires you? What motivates you?
To be better than I was yesterday.
