The Real Harris: Meet Shirley Malean

Tell us about your background. How did you get your start in the construction/service/BAS business?

The business side of the construction industry is completely different from any position I’ve held in the past. My background is in business operations and paralegal work.

What drew you to Harris? What makes you stay?

My internal drive for continual learning led me to Harris. The licensing role was new, which gave me the opportunity to shape its tasks and function into an asset for the Harris team.

What do you enjoy about working at Harris?

I enjoy working with people in all different areas of the company – building relationships and partnering with team members at all levels to reach mutually beneficial outcomes and successes.

What is the best part about your position?

The best part of my position is that I’m always learning something new!

What traits do you think are important for someone in your role to be successful?

Drive, determination, commitment and a willingness to learn. Being proactive, taking initiative, confidence, integrity, strong communication and always knowing the value of being flexible.

What are your main responsibilities and initiatives that  you lead?

I maintain the contractor licensing for each Harris office location. I work with tradespeople to obtain new licensing and partner with leaders to establish trade-license succession plans. I collaborate with leaders to establish licensing + contracting policy, while maintaining our System for Award Management accounts with the Federal government.  I’ve recently been learning how to complete certain requirements within our various compliance portals.

What are you passionate about at work?

Research and learning—whether it’s a license we need in a new state or partnering with another department on a project, I’m always willing to jump in help.

How do you like to re-charge?

A nice long run followed by a glass of fine whiskey.

What are you most proud of at Harris?

I’m proud of the way the entire company came together to face the challenge of working through COVID. The motto of Safety First, Last, and Always is truly a part of our culture.

What is one thing Harris employees wouldn’t know about you?

I ride a sport bike – both on the open road and on the track.

What drew you to this industry?

The opportunity to explore a new industry. Also, the opportunity to step into a new role and shape it into what I (and my manager) had envisioned.

What do you wish the public knew about Harris?

The learning opportunities and growth potential in the company are endless if you’re willing to put forth the effort.

What inspires you? What motivates you?

I’m both inspired and motivated by challenge. Whether it’s a new work project, attempting a new PR on the trail, or a new riding technique—I work to become smarter, faster and stronger daily.
