American Iron Metal Shredder
Harris was hired by scrap metal recyclist American Iron & Steel Company as the general contractor to build a new, state-of-the-art enclosed metal shredder. The project included building the facility to house the shredder, along with the plumbing, HVAC, electrical, process equipment (shredder and conveyors), dust control system, walkways and platforms.
The metal shredder was built with several unique features that allowed it to operate safely and conform to environmental regulations. Rather than discharging stormwater, Harris installed a 250,000-gallon stormwater retention system which stores rainwater from the 13-acre site to be used for dust control in the shredding operations.
Dust and water control instruments surround the new shredding equipment to meet demanding environmental regulations that allow the facility to operate in an urban area and by the Mississippi River. Due to the dangerous nature of the shredding operations, the interior of the building is armor-plated to protect the structure from flying metal.
