Carleton College Science Complex Addition
Carleton College’s Science Complex Addition is a 118,000-square foot LEED Gold project which includes the demolition of their existing science building, Mudd Hall, and renovating the existing Hulings and Olin Halls classroom and laboratory spaces, including a 3,000-square foot vivarium. The project also includes new construction to connect the current buildings into one science facility. Harris was selected as the mechanical subcontractor by McGough Construction for the demolition of the previous building and the mechanical work on the new science addition and atrium.
Harris was an integral partner during the design phase, joining the general contractor, the engineering team and campus facility staff to help determine cost, schedule, design and constructability challenges. The early selection of a design-assist partner enabled the team to work effectively to understand budget, schedule and design implications prior to construction. Our preconstruction team worked closely in a design-assist capacity and led the virtual design construction team to create an accurate model of structures to be built. Our team worked with all trades to creatively solve challenges regarding constructability together.
Working with the complexity of completing mechanical work within an occupied building, Harris installed new air handling units, boilers, variable air volume systems as well as gas and utility piping.
