Flint Hills Pine Bend Refinery Hydrogen Compressors
Harris was hired to take on the hydrogen compressor area in Area 4 of the Pine Bend Refinery’s new ultra-low sulfur diesel unit #29.
To accommodate the tight schedule, Harris made use of BIM modeling Flint Hills Resources provided. Harris moved two BIM/VDC drafters on-site to work with the completed model. Harris used this model to create work packages and kept productivity running at 96 percent throughout the job.
Harris installed 10,000 feet of process piping with no weld failures. Welding in the compressors was 100 percent x-rayed due to the high-pressure hydrogen that would be passing through.
Despite these extra hurdles, Harris completed the job on-time and under budget. Harris was able to trim the work force down to 80 welders with the help of 3-D modeling, layout, scheduling, fabrication and material handling. Harris positioned their own safety director on-site at all times and concluded the project with zero injuries.
