Gustavus Nobel Hall of Science Expansion + Renovation

Harris was awarded the mechanical contract for the expansion and renovation of the existing science lab building, The Nobel Hall houses the departments of biology, chemistry, geography, and geology. The 74,000 square-foot south expansion included new laboratories, teaching and study spaces, and connected Nobel Hall with Schaefer Fine Arts Center, creating a laboratory theatre. The project is certified LEED gold and has already helped contribute to over $186,000 in energy rebates for Gustavus.

Harris completed the project in phases as to not disrupt ongoing classes on the campus. A challenge during the project was we had numerous plumbing and piping materials that required manufacturer training for different fusion methods. Another challenge was the scheduling for the removal and installation of the underground plumbing in the existing building to condense durations and have minimal impact on others. During construction, Harris procured, designed and installed a temporary heating system in the building that was not 100% enclosed.

Also, during the project, additions were requested by the owner. Harris worked closely with the design team, general contractor and owner to incorporate value engineering into portions of the project so the additions would fit the budget and the schedule.
