Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory

The Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory project will expand SEPRL capabilities to respond to highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks in providing research information for eradication and control, as well as data for control of other various viruses and diseases. The project is on track to be completed in early 2025.

The new construction includes four new buildings on an existing 60-year-old campus. It was a challenge to coordinate the construction of the four new buildings, one after another. Harris pushed prefabrication in the plumbing scope to stay on schedule and reduce field labor. We prefabricated materials such as the pump stacks and plumbing risers for quick installation. Other mechanical equipment was purchased by M.A. Mortenson through a secondary contractor. Harris’ flexibility and expertise allowed us to coordinate with the secondary contractor to successfully install their equipment. The project design was another challenge for the team. The project started without a finished set of plans. Harris’ BIM team stepped in and kept Harris on top throughout the design process which had constant updates and revisions. The labs have a 3AG Containment Level and incorporate an EDS (Effluent Decontamination System) which led to the mechanical rooms and design being built around the EDS system. The system required many design changes to fit the exact needs of the laboratory and for the equipment to be viable. The Harris personnel onsite, as well as the BIM team, successfully coordinated with the designer of the equipment to meet the requirements of this highly technical system.
