Confidential Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Facility Phase I
Harris was hired as the mechanical contractor for the Confidential Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Facility Phase I project. The manufacturing facility is being used to build a new electric sedan model.
For the project, Harris provided the services of BIM, design and engineering, HVAC, plumbing and preconstruction services while subcontracting crane, insulation and rigging. The project had a delayed start with an already aggressive schedule. As a solution, Harris held meetings with the owner at 6:00 a.m. three times a week to creatively problem solve for schedule acceleration. Harris also maximized prefabrication (including 80% of Central Utility Plant assembled offsite), moved piping to the roof, added a 2nd shift, and increased assembly rack sizes to accommodate 80′ sections for rapid installation. Despite starting behind schedule, Harris and the collaborative trades were able to accelerate completion by two months and finish early.
Another challenge during the project was the owner requested a functional compressed air system on the first floor to be completed as a high priority project for needed prototype assembly. Harris rescheduled the project to prioritize BIM, fabrication and installation of the compressed air loop for the prototype needs. This included coordination and valving to ensure subsequent air needs could be incorporated into the prioritized prototype loop system with minimal rework and expense.
