U of M Andrew Boss Laboratory of Meat Science

ABLMS is a mechanical infrastructure improvement project at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. The building has four levels of labs and faculty offices along with a modern meat processing facility. Harris was contracted to upgrade the current constant air handling systems (located in the lower level) with higher efficiency variable air volume (VAV) systems, consolidate lab exhaust, install energy recovery coils, and replace aging ductwork and piping systems. The project is phased so that the building can remain in use during construction. Both red meat and poultry will continue to be processed weekly.

Harris has completed 3 phases of the project. Phase 3, most recently completed, included a mechanical remodel of two basement mechanical rooms, basement offices, locker rooms, meat processing spaces, second-floor lab and office spaces and a roof level penthouse. In addition to a remodel, five new AHUs included an added glycol ERU system and a steam to HW conversion. Prefabrication was a major factor in meeting the aggressive schedule set to avoid disruption to the university’s class schedule. The project is forecasted to come in under budget and ahead of schedule.
