How Harris Uses BIM/VDC to Execute Precision & Quality on Projects
(ST. PAUL, Minn.) – 3D-modeling plays a critical role when it comes to the design and execution of today’s buildings. In its latest expertise video, Harris showcases how its in-house designers, engineers, construction experts, project managers and other collaborating team members take full advantage of BIM/VDC to bring digital design and engineering, active planning and innovation to customers across the country.
The new BIM/VDC expertise video is part of the leading mechanical contractor’s “The REEL Harris” series.
According to Allied Marketing Research, the BIM market size in 2019 was $5.2 billion and is projected to grow to $16 billion by 2027. And no wonder. By employing Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), users generate complex, highly-detailed 3D modeling and documentation of a building or facility’s physical and functional characteristics – before it’s built, creating a digital twin of a project in real time.
“BIM is information management at its key,” says Sarju Pandya, vice president + chief technology officer, Harris. “We’re able to create data, make it valuable to our building process and make it operable to each and every stakeholder we partner with.”
Harris is unique in how it provides a collaborative relationship between construction and design where defined responsibilities are shared between the team, allowing the entire building process to become smoother and more transparent. Deliverables are executed from digital models – with exact precision – at one of Harris’ strategically-located prefabrication shops around the country.
With its prefab teams building MEP components offsite in controlled environments, Harris uses its hub-and-spoke approach for just-in-time delivery and installation. Field allowances are basically eliminated as BIM allows the prefabricated components to be seen at a granular level. Additional benefits include:
- Increased quality with exact precision
- Real-time collaboration with stakeholders
- Fewer supply chain issues
- Greater analysis of constructability
- Maximized schedules + budgets
- Smaller crews + safer jobsites
- Optimized product consistency for owners
- Less waste and challenges in the field
It is vital that BIM/VDC be employed the right way, however. Statistica reports that the number of construction professionals using the tool has risen from 13% in 2011 to 73% in 2020. With that, owners and general contractors should ask questions and be sure to enlist a trusted partner with proper knowledge and experience to leverage advanced modeling tools.
Harris provides MEP on projects of all scope and size including stadiums and arenas, manufacturing facilities, data centers, hospitals and medical centers, K12 schools and universities, concert halls and casinos, hotels, and power delivery. Other Harris expertise videos capturing work at its offices and jobsites across the country include Design + Engineering, Manufacturing/Prefab, Harris Overview and Culture, Watch for other “REELS” to roll out soon.
