The Real Harris: Meet Jolynda Johnston
Tell us about your background. How did you get your start in the construction/service/BAS business?
I’ve always been passionate about creating things and solving problems. The thought that something I could build might leave a lasting impact on the world has always thrilled me. After years of exploring many career paths, I decided to pursue construction management. It was during this time that I crossed paths with Nate Nielson, who later offered me a position working alongside him. The rest, as they say, is history.
What drew you to Harris? What makes you stay?
It’s always been about the people. We have an exceptional team that is deeply passionate about their work and genuinely care about everyone’s success and growth.
What do you enjoy about working at Harris (what about the company itself made you want to work here)?
We pursue challenging jobs, turning each day into a new adventure that pushes everyone to exceed what you thought was possible.
What is the best part about your position (the day-to-day, people, a special project you were involved with)?
One of the things I find most fulfilling in my role is the constant need and opportunity to innovate and explore new solutions. This aspect not only challenges me to think creatively but also encourages a dynamic approach to problem-solving. Being in an environment that values innovation allows me to grow personally and professionally, expanding my skills and perspectives while contributing to the success of our projects.
What traits do you think are important for someone in your role to be successful?
In my role, I juggle various responsibilities, requiring me to adapt to change and maintain optimism, which is crucial. Our profession presents constant challenges with high expectations and a demand for results.
What are your main responsibilities and initiatives that you lead?
In my role, I focus on overseeing processes and ensuring our VDC team uses BIM software effectively. I also foster collaboration among different groups to enhance our collective experience. This includes training team members in BIM software, troubleshooting any issues that come up and integrating new software to streamline workflows and promote best practices. It’s all about making sure we work together smoothly and efficiently!
What are you passionate about at work?
In my view, efficiency is crucial—I’m always on the hunt for the best approach and never settle for ‘good enough’. I firmly believe that there’s a solution for every challenge; the real magic lies in how we execute it.
How do you like to re-charge?
The outdoors is my sanctuary—I love immersing myself in nature and tackling new projects in my backyard. Building has always been my passion, and turning my ideas into reality fills me with joy and a deep sense of tranquility, keeping me grounded.
What keeps you up at night?
Unfortunately, I often find myself as my own toughest critic, always pushing for improvement. When I notice something that needs fixing, it tends to stay on my mind, occasionally impacting my sleep.
What are you most proud of at Harris?
I take pride in our journey and the direction we’re heading at Harris. Our commitment to excellence is deeply ingrained in our team’s values. We prioritize innovation and collaboration as essential pillars of our success. Being part of a company that consistently strives for improvement and embraces challenges is something I am truly proud of.
What is one thing Harris employees wouldn’t know about you?
Those who know me well would tell you I’m always knee-deep in building and remodeling projects. I have completely renovated my own home inside and out but took that to the next level and started crafting detailed wooden dollhouses, complete with tiny furniture and décor inspired by real-life designs.
What drew you to this industry?
It was by chance—I was studying construction management when one of my professors approached me and invited me to join a Mechanical club he was leading. If he hadn’t encouraged me to join, I might have pursued a career in architecture instead.
What inspires you? What motivates you?
I find inspiration in innovation, believing that there’s always a way to achieve something—you just need to find the right approach to make it happen.
