U of M 25 MW Plant Retrofit

Citing their obsolete boilers and growing demand for electricity and power, the University of Minnesota turned to Harris for help with the installation of a state-of-the-art combined heat and power plant for their Minneapolis campus. Due to zoning and permitting constraints, the new turbine generator, heat recovery system and modern mechanical systems had to fit in the historic Old Main Heating Plant. To head off space issues and potential clashes, Harris and its ...Read More

GE Propane Vapor System

Harris worked with Standby Systems Inc to fabricate 13 skids for a General Electric propane vapor system to be installed in the country of Ghana, Africa. The skids, which were shipped internationally, contained piping, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, structural frames and supports for the metering and vaporization of the propane. Framing and piping for the skids were constructed from 304 stainless steel, which quality specifications were required to meet the pressure equipment directive (PED) of ...Read More

Pepco Waterfront Substation

The Pepco Waterfront Substation project was a new substation installation for the Potomac Electric Power Company of Washington, D.C. It was a design-assist job with Coakley Williams Construction and their mechanical engineer, META Engineers. The building had to be designed to house and accommodate a new ABB turbine technology that Pepco was using to make power with a smaller footprint than their traditional power plants. The site in Southeast Washington, D.C. was selected because of its proximity ...Read More

Owatonna Energy Station

Harris performed the complete mechanical installation for Southern Minnesota Municipal Power’s 38.8 MW natural gas-fired power plant in Owatonna, MN. The plant was designed to replace the power generating capacity the city lost during a flood in 2010. The plant consists of four new Caterpillar 10 MW gas-fired generators as well as related piping and equipment. Harris installed the engine support piping which included air piping, lube oil piping, natural gas piping, used oil piping, glycol piping and cooled ...Read More

Xcel 5th Street Substation Transformer Cooling System Replacement

Harris worked as the prime contractor for Xcel Energy’s 5th Street Substation Transformer Cooling System Replacement project. The project involved demolishing the existing cooling system and installing an efficient, closed-loop system to service the new transformer. Prior to the closed-loop system Harris installed, Xcel was drawing their cooling water from two deep wells. Xcel decided this system was not a sustainable use of groundwater and made plans to replace it. Harris took special safety ...Read More

Novus Pacific Plant

Harris helped Novus Energy LLC design and build a mobile demonstration plant. The demonstration plant is a trailer-mounted, waste-to-energy conversion system which is fully integrated with its own automated control system. The system is a completely functional plant capable of converting high-solid organic materials to methane-rich bio-gas, organic fertilizer and clean water. The demonstration plant has been used to showcase new technology and fine-tune the design configuration for full-scale plants. It has been operating since 2010 and has ...Read More

Qteros Cellulosic Ethanol Fermentation Plant

Qteros is a biofuel startup that produces ethanol from various biomass feedstocks. The cellulosic ethanol fermentation pilot plant can produce about 1,000 gallons of ethanol from biomass sources such as wood chips and fibrous plant residues. Harris furnished equipment, design engineering and installation services, working closely with Qteros to integrate used owner furnished equipment and new equipment to build the pilot plant. Harris developed the process engineering and controls to match Qteros’ technology requirements. The project was closely documented to ...Read More

Solana Solar Generating Station

Harris completed a total of six projects for the Solana Generating Station. The solar power plant located near Gila Bend, Arizona features parabolic shaped mirrors mounted on structures that track the sun and concentrate the sun’s rays to provide heat to power a conventional turbine. Harris installed over 170,000 linear feet of large bore carbon steel welded pipe over a three-square mile area. Our dedicated work force peaked with 150 pipefitters working up to two 12-hour shifts seven ...Read More

Otter Tail Ag Ethanol Plant

Located on a 109-acre site, Otter Tail Ag – a 55 million gallon per year ethanol plant – takes corn grown by local farmers and turns it into ethanol. Harris was chosen as the prime contractor for this project and oversaw the complete construction of the plant. Harris teamed with Delta-T Corp on the design technology, and after months of development and pricing, contracts were signed in October of 2006 and civil site work began immediately. To facilitate construction, Harris developed ...Read More
